A Voter ID is an essential identity document which is must for every citizen of India. If you want to apply for a Voter ID card, make sure that your name is present on the voters' list. If your name is missing from the voters' list, you can then apply and your name is registered online on nvsp.in website.

Following are the steps you need to take in order to apply for a Voter ID card online:

You need to fill Form 6 if you are a first-time voter or if you have changed your constituency.

NRI voters must fill forms 6A and 7 for any kind of addition or deletion in the voter ID card.

Select your desired language and other important details that are needed. Upload all the relevant documents while filling the form.

Check all the details that you have uploaded. You will receive a confirmation e-mail through which you can track the voter ID application status.

Normally it takes around a month's time to process the Voter ID card application and issue the Voter's Identity Card.

If you want to apply for a Voter ID card offline, you must fill two copies of Form 6. The Form 6 is a free of cost form which is available in Electoral Registration offices and can also be accessed from Assistant Electoral Registration or Booth Level or Electoral Registration officers. 

After filling the form 6 with all the information that is required, you need to send the form by post or to the respective electoral officer of your polling area.

You can visit https://ecisveep.nic.in/ for details of voter brochure and can also call on '1950' for necessary details. You need to add your STD code before '1950'.

How to apply for a Voter ID card through NSVP Portal?

An applicant can visit the National Voter’s Service Portal (NSVP) website and download Form number 6. Fill the form with all the information that is asked and submit along with a photo and supporting documents at the nearest election office.

Documents needed for a Voter ID Card:

A person needs to have a scanned copy of the following documents or photocopies if forms are to be filled online. The list of supporting documents are:

-One passport-sized photo
-One identity proof like Aadhaar card issued by UIDAI, PAN card, driving license, birth certificate, high school mark sheet.
-One address proof - Ration card, electricity or utility proof, passport, driving license or current bank passbook.

Who can apply for a Voter ID card?

-The applicant must be an Indian Citizen and must have attained the age of 18 years.
-The applicant must not be a prisoner, of unsound mind or averted from voting because of corrupt practices in the past.
-The applicant needs to have a permanent address and submit all the required documents.
-The applicant can apply for a Voter ID card only through government-approved websites and centres.

The Voter ID Card application status can be tracked by visiting the National Voter Service Portal (NVSP). You must have the reference number of the voter ID issued at the time of applying.

  • Visit the official NVSP website - https://www.nvsp.in/ to check the status of your application.
  • Click on the 'Application status' link.
  • Enter the reference ID and click on 'Track Application status'. Your application status will be displayed on the screen.

A person can also track the status of their voter ID application status using the calling facility. You need to dial the toll-free number 1950 and follow the instructions to know the status of the application.

Check voter ID application status via SMS:

Election Commission of India sends an SMS alert to the registered number after you successfully register for a voter ID card. The SMS tells about the acceptance or rejection of the voter ID application request.
