Right to Information Act 2005 provides timely response to citizen requests for government information. The Right to Information Act (RTI) helps citizens get clarity and transparency on different issues from the government. RTI online portal registration is the first step for this.

An initiative taken by the Department of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, the RTI Act provides a gateway to the citizens for quick search of information on the details of first Appellate Authorities, PIOs, etc. Below you can find the steps for how to file RTI online through RTI online portal Govt. of India:

How to file RTI online?

These are the steps you need to take in order to file an RTI Online:
  • Visit the official RTI portal - https://rtionline.gov.in.
  • Click on Submit Request option in order to submit an RTI application.
  • 'Guidelines for use of RTI ONLINE PORTAL' will be displayed on the screen which mentions different guidelines for using RTI online portal. 
  • Read the guidelines and then scroll down below and click on the checkbox "I have read and understood the above guidelines." 
  • Click Submit button.
  • After that, Online RTI Request Form screen will be displayed. 
  • Select Ministry or Department for which the applicant wants to file an RTI from Select Ministry/Department/Apex body dropdown.
  • Select Public Authority from the drop down menu which populates only after selecting the Ministry/Department/Apex body.
  • Enter Personal Details of RTI Applicant like Name, Gender, Address, Pin Code, Country, State, Status among Rural or Urban, Educational status among Literate or Illiterate, Phone number, Mobile Number(for receiving SMS alerts) and Email-ID.
  • Enter Request details such as Citizenship as Only Indian citizens can file RTI Request application.
  • Choose Yes or No for "Is the Applicant Below Poverty Line?". If any citizen belongs to BPL category, he must choose Yes and needs to upload a BPL card certificate in the supporting document field. No RTI fee is required to be paid by BPL cardholders.
  • Enter Text for RTI Request application.
  • Choose any supporting document you may have (only pdf file).
  • Enter Security Code and click Submit.
  • Click on the 'Make payment' option after filling in all the details. RTI payment can be made via internet banking, ATM-cum-debit card, or credit card. 
  • Click on Pay.
As an RTI applicant, you will get an email and SMS alert after submission of the RTI application. After successful submission of the application, a unique registration number would be issued, which may be referred by the applicant for any future references. Non-BPL category applicant needs to make a payment of Rs 10. The application can be uploaded in the supporting document field. So, that was a good information on how to file rti application online.
